I met an awesome thru-hiker named Outloud in one of the shelters. She writes songs while she’s hiking and this one, you may have guessed it, goes to the tune “Like a Virgin” by Madonna. I’m sharing it here with her permission.
Like a Through Hiker
We made it through the Southern States.
We made it through the rocks.
Right now I feel like I am strong as an ox.
Over 2000 miles.
We’ll hike the whole East Coast.
It’s hard to decide which part I like most.
We would me incomplete.
It would be a sin if we don’t get to Katahdin, but we will.
Chorus:
Like a thru-hiker.
Hikin’ Georgia to Maine.
Like a thru-hiker-yeah we know, we’re all insane.
Gonna take a lot of pictures.
Gonna take a lot of breaks.
Gonna eat lots of ramein and Little Debbie cakes.
We follow white blazes, all day every day.
You can smell our stench from a mile away.
We all came separately but now we’re like family, cause we’ve been through a lot.
Yeah, we’ve been through a lot and we’ve hardly fought.
(Chorus)
Our boots are muddy, and our clothes are stained.
We sure have seen our fair share of rain.
It’s been quite a challenge. But there’s so much we’ve learned.
This pride we feel we have all earned.
We each hike our own hike.
We don’t drive, we don’t bike.
We just walk and run.
Yeah we’ll walk or run ‘til the whole trail is done.
(Chorus).
