Reader Question #7: Going Southbound

by Adelaide on August 21, 2009

Abe Y. from Austin, TX.

Question: Why did you choose to hike the trail Southbound?

Answer: Because I am a masochist and a misanthrope.

Actually, I love people, so it is sometimes lonely to hike Southbound, but I am getting some good time to reflect and meditate. And I am importing hikers by getting my friends to meet me at different points along the trail.

Hiking Southbound does mean that you hit many of the hardest parts first, when you are still weak. You don’t get favorable weather in Maine and the bugs are much worse. Plus you run into snow when you get to the South.

Wait, whose stupid idea was it hike to Southbound anyways?
