Reader Question #9: Beautiful Things

in Reader Q & A

Cecily O. from Portland, OR

Question: You seem to complain a lot on your blog, are you actually having a good time?

Answer: Yes. Things on the trail keep getting better, except when they’re not.

I am seeing beautiful things here. For example, the other day I started hiking in a thick fog. As the day went on, I passed through the bogs and came to a pond. The fog had burned off enough that the rocks in front of me were in sharp focus, but everything farther out was still so shrouded in white that I couldn’t see the other side of the water.  Everything was quiet, eerie–I felt like I was on the very edge of the world.

Also, I can now kill a fly that is landing on my head in 3 smacks, which is good as this result in minimal loss of brain function.
