Shoving my pack through the Mahoosac Notch

The Mahoosac Notch is known as “the hardest mile on the Appalachian Trail.” In it, you wiggle under big boulders, stuff your backpack through holes, and hop from rock to rock. It was incredibly fun. Here are a few pictures of me shoving my pack ahead of me as I climb through a tunnel.

The notch is a special place. I did it in the pouring rain, alone. I was amused and a bit afraid. There was still snow and ice down deep between the rocks. I saw a moose skeleton nearby. I ran between peaks to avoid thunderstorms. A bear woke me up one night by nosing my back through my tent wall. The Mahoosic Range is better than the Whites.

I saw the moose skeleton, too! Or, what was left of it. People had taken a lot of the bones. Strange story it getting stuck there.

It’s pretty impressive that you went through the notch in the pouring rain, that must have made it 10 times harder. And the Mahoosics are lovely. Despite all the slugs and bugs, I do miss Maine. :)

I loved the notch, too! I hope you and Saint are having a great time together. The trail went from being mobbed to empty now that most of the nobos have passed.
